Welcome to 2D Animation 35S
Course Assignments & Activities
Assignments will be added to the table below as they are introduced in class. Any useful links, handouts, or additional information will be provided in the form of a hyperlink :)
Download & Hand-In Instructions:
To download a document from the class website, simply click on it (download, or, hyperlinks, will appear in blue). Always choose "Save File" and make sure that the box that preserves the document's current formatting is checked off. If the file automatically opens, close it. Now, navigate to your Downloads folder, CUT the document from this folder, and paste it into the appropriate folder within your Student Drive. Title each document you download/hand in as follows: “loginname_assignmenttitle” (ex. hambri_AnticipationGuide). Open the document from your folder, then use the document to complete your assignment. Once you're finished, hand it in by COPYing the document and pasting it (don't just drag and drop - it can cause major issues with your work) into Ms. Hammond's Hand In folder.

10) Mini-Lesson Movie Program: Adobe Flash CC Hand In: .fla, .swf (blog) Due Date: Thurs, November 10th |
This is your final assignment for the 2D Animation course! *sad face* In this animation, you will be combining the skillset you showed off in the "Digital Flipbook" assignment with the skills you have learned form the "LaPelota" tutorial exercise to produce your very own ActionScript-driven mini-lesson movie! Make sure that you fill out the "Proposal" portion of your Assignment handout before movie on to the actual animation! As always, be creative, take risks, and have fun! |
Assignment Rubric Also be sure to check out some of Mini-Lesson Movies produced by last semester's students for inspiration! |
9) La Pelota Program: Adobe Flash CC Screen Check: .fla, .swf (blog) Due Date: Friday, November 4th |
In order to learn all the fun and exciting skills you will need to complete your future "Mini-Lesson Movie" assignment, you will be taking on the "LaPelota" tutorial exercise. It is a fairly lengthy tutorial, but now that you have some experience in working with Flash I bet that it will only take you 2-3 classes to get through. |
This exercise is available in print form ...but you can access it here if you NEED to Here is an example your animation should resemble once you're finished. |
8) Digital Flipbook Assignment Program: Adobe Animate Hand in: 1 folder called "loginname_digitalflipbook" that contains a .fla, .png and .swf copy of your assignment Due Date: Wed, November 2nd |
Congratulations! If you're starting this assignment it means that you have mastered the basics of Animate, and that you are ready to use these basics (without those wordy instructions) to create your very own animation from scratch - well, almost from scratch. The only rule is that you MUST use the analog (hand-made) flipbook you created in class as the storyboard for your animation. PLEASE feel free to alter, add-on and adapt your flipbook - in order to create the best product possible, you will need to. While your mind may be running wild with big ideas (a good thing), please be conscious of your time constraints - you have only 5 classes to create this masterpiece! Suggested timeline: 1 class - tweak your idea and experiment with animations 1.5 classes - create your artwork (background & characters) 2.5 classes - create your animation (on the timeline) |
7) Adobe Animate Intro Exercises Program: Adobe Animate Completion Check: Ms. Hammond will do a completion check on your "Animate_IntroExercises" folder (which should contain a working & exported file for each of the 8 exercises) Due Date: Monday, Oct 24th |
Now that you have played around with some simple computer animation, you're ready to start playing in the big leagues! During this part of the course you will be introduced to the Adobe Animate (formerly Adobe Flash) workspace, and tools. By completing the 8 small exercises in the "Intro Exercises" duotang, you will learn how to draw and animate a variety of different objects and motions using the program. This will prepare you to branch off on your own to create your very own project! |
All intro exercises will be available in printed form ...but you can access them here if you NEED to Upon arrival to class for the next 4 weeks, you must grab an Animate duotang from the black folder holder to use during class |
6) Pivot Stick Figure Program: Pivot Stick Figure Hand-In: folder called "loginname_pivot" containing .gifs for all 3 activities Due Date: Friday, October 7th |
Weeeeehoooo! Now that we've learned (most) of the key concepts and terminology when it comes to animation, we can begin our journey towards becoming CGI masters! We will start... humbly... by using Pivot Stick Figure. This program is MUCH more basic than Adobe Animate (which used to be called Flash). Thus, it will allow you to experiment with the basics of smooth transitions and believable movement when it comes to computer animation before having to learn a fairly complex program, as well. For this assignment, you will complete a series of 3 activities using Pivot, which you can download in the "Resources" section --> If you have never used Pivot, I suggest you take a quick read over the Basic Instructions document. If you've used Pivot before, there will be no need to do so. Happy animating! |
5) Stop Motion Animation Program: Movie Maker Hand-In: Stop Motion .mp4 file Due Date: October 4th |
Now that you've got a basic understanding of how animation works under your belt, we are going to cross the threshold from completely hand-drawn frames, to incorporate more advanced technology. You will be using digital cameras to capture photos, which you will use to create a 10-15 second stop-motion animation of your choosing using the timeline in Adobe Premiere Elements. Before you begin taking photos, you must complete the following tasks:
|
Stop Motion Animation (assignment) Storyboard Template (download and print) Movie Maker Instructions (NOT Windows Movie Maker) |
4) Kineograph (Hand-Made Flipbook) Program: N/A - Use your hands! Hand-In: Sticky Note Flipbook Due Date: Thur, Sept. 22nd |
In order to demonstrate your understanding of persistence of vision, cel animation, tweening, key frames, onion-skinning, and the principles of animation, you will create a short, hand-drawn animation in the form of a flipbook (aka kineograph). To produce your animation, you will use a simple sticky-note pad, writing utensils, and your imagination. The transparency of the sticky notes will allow you to create frame-by-frame animation via a process called “onion-skinning,” which you will be using in your computer-generated animation, as well! |
Kineograph Assignment Handout (cel-animated flipbook) Fun Examples: Valentines Love Story Ultimate Compilation Advanced Flipbooking How to Make a Flipbook Video (in case you want extra help) |
3) Animation Artifacts Program: N/A - Use your hands! Present: Animation Artifact Due Date: Wed, Sept. 14th |
Each of you will be assigned to a group, and each group will be assigned an animation artifact to build, animate, and research in preparation to present to the class. Assign roles within your group for building it (ex. one person will assemble the artifact, while the other designs the animation). Once you have assembled your artifact, research its history (including: what it does, who invented it, when it was invented, and why it was replaced). |
Video links for each artifact: Thaumatrope Phenakistoscope Zoetrope *Note: If you want to view the History of Animation presentation we watched in class, simply click to link to go to the Intro to Animation Prezi above (they're the same thing) :) |
2) Intro to Animation Scavenger Hunt Program: Prezi & Word Hand In: Scavenger Hunt Due Date: Tuesday, Sept. 13th |
Before you begin creating your own animations, it is important that you understand where animation came from, and how it has evolved over time... so that you know what you're getting yourself into! Use the presentation we watched in class, as well as online resources, to respond to the questions inside the Scavenger Hunt document. Please use a different font colour than black (colour of questions). |
1) Blogger Post #1 Program: Google Blogger Publish: "First 2D Post!" Due Date: Friday, Sept. 9th |
As a class, we will set up your Animation blogs together. Then, I will walk you through the creation of your very first blog post :) Use your bpsdedu gmail account (firstinitial[email protected]) to set this bad boy up. You will use these blogs for the rest of the semester, to comment and reflect upon your learning after each major activity/assignment! |
