Course Assignments & Activities
Assignments will be added to the table below as they are introduced in class. Any useful links, handouts, or additional information will be provided in the form of a hyperlink :)
Download & Hand-In Instructions:
To download a document from the class website, simply click on it (download, or, hyperlinks, will appear in blue). Always choose "Save File" and make sure that the box that preserves the document's current formatting is checked off. If the file automatically opens, close it. Now, navigate to your Downloads folder, CUT the document from this folder, and paste it into the appropriate folder within your Student Drive. Title each document you download/hand in as follows: “loginname_assignmenttitle” (ex. hambri_AnticipationGuide). Open the document from your folder, then use the document to complete your assignment. Once you're finished, hand it in by COPYing the document and pasting it (don't just drag and drop - it can cause major issues with your work) into Ms. Hammond's Hand In folder.

To do this, you will complete a series of 3 small mini-tutorials contained within the .PSD and word files on the right -->. Make sure to 1) focus on learning and retaining what you read (don't just fly through the steps without thinking) - you will need to know how to do all of these things on your own in the future, and 2) have fun! |

This is your final assignment for the "Photography" portion of this course (before we move on to Photoshop). In this assignment, you will be tasked with capturing 4 types of photos - portrait, landscape, motion, and macro! This is a cumulative assignment, meaning that in addition to showing me what you know about the 4 types of photos, I expect you to be using the 12 principles of photography in your photos as well! AND DON'T FORGET TO TELL A STORY each and every time you click the shutter button :) |
8) Composition Basics 2 Program: Powerpoint, Word, and Image (photo) files Hand In: "CompBasics2_Assignment" (6 photos - 3 original, 3 edited & PeerCritique sheet) Due Date: A - Thursday, Nov. 3rd B - Friday, Nov. 4th |
This assignment will introduce you to 6 more core principles of photography, which you should take into consideration EACH TIME you press the shutter button. It will also introduce you to online photo editing programs such as Pixlr Express, Be Funky, and Pic Monkey and build up your peer assessment skills. Once you've learned about these 6 principles you will grab a camera and head outdoors to try to capture at least 3 photos that demonstrate ALL 6 techniques. You will then head back inside to edit them in order to make them even better! |
7) Composition Basics 1 Program: Powerpoint, Word, and Image (photo) files Hand In: "CompBasics1_Critique" and "CompBasics1_Assignment" Due Date: A - Monday, Oct. 24th B - Tuesday, Oct. 25th |
Now that you know WHAT a photo is, and WHY we take them, it's time to learn HOW to take a strong one! In this section, you will study 6 of the core principles of photographic composition (aka, how your subject is arranged within your image). Once you've learned the basics, you will have a chance to head outdoors with a camera to apply what you've learned in your own photos! |
6) What is a Photo? Program: Powerpoint & Paper Hand In: "What is a Photo" Test Test Date: A - Monday, Oct. 10th B - Tuesday, Oct. 11th |
By now, you've had a chance to experiment when it comes to operating a digital camera. In the process of creating your Animoto Storytelling Montage you used your 8-20 megapixel camera's digital image sensor to capture an arrangement of pixels, which you uploaded to your computer's memory in the form of jpgs/jpegs to use in a low-resolution slideshow. But what does any of that EVEN MEAN?! Well, in this lesson you are going to find out. This is not going to be the most riveting part of this course, but it is BY FAR the most important. Your understanding of pixels, file formats, file size, resolution and aspect ratio is going to play a key role in the success you experience within this course. Without understanding the building blocks of a photo, it is impossible to ensure that your photos will be well-suited to your form and purpose. |
5) Storytelling Montage Program: Animoto Hand In: "Storytelling Montage" Animoto presentation Due Date: A - Friday, Sept. 30th B - Monday, Oct. 3rd |
The time has FINALLY come for you to begin taking photos! This project will introduce you to the following concepts: 1) basic care for digital cameras, 2) basic operation of digital cameras, and 3) use of web 2.0 tool, Animoto! It will also put what you learned from the previous assignment to the test, since your objective is to TELL A STORY using only 15 photos in the form of an animated slideshow. Once you have captured your photos, upload them onto your computer's //:D drive, then upload them into Movie Maker to turn your still images into an animation! |

4) A Picture is Worth 1000 Words Program: Word Hand In: "Picture is Worth 1000 Words" document Due Date: A - Monday, Sept. 26th B - Tuesday, Sept. 27th |
The time has ALMOST come to begin capturing your own photos. BUT before you do, you need to understand one very important thing about photos: each one tells a story. A good photographer thinks about the story they want to tell, why they want to tell it, and who they are telling it to before pressing the shutter button. In this lesson, you will analyze the stories told by some of the greatest advertising, famous, and everyday photos of our time! |
Shared Drive: copy and paste (into your Unit 2-Storytelling folder) an image of your choice from each of the 3 folders inside Ms. H's Shared Drive. A Picture Is Worth 1000 Words Assignment |
3) Digital Age Powerpoint Slide Program: Powerpoint Hand In: Digital Age (1) PP Slide Due Date: A - Tuesday, Sept. 20th B - Wednesday, Sept. 21st |
In this lesson you will learn about the history of the camera and photography! You will find out how the "mechanics" behind the Camera Obscura gave birth to modern-day cameras, and how these modern-day cameras have become increasingly more complex! Then, it will be your turn to add to the history lesson - by creating your very own powerpoint slide to add to Ms. Hammond's presentation. Choose any photography-related topic from the "Digital Age" (1983-present) and create a clear, concise powerpoint slide that includes 1) the topic's name, 2) a description of the topic, 3) at least 1 relevant image, 4) neat and attractive organization, 5) citation of sources! |
2) Weebly Digital Portfolio Program: Weebly Hand In: N/A Due Date: A - Thursday, Sept. 15th B = Friday, Sept. 16th |
Instead of creating a paper portfolio for Digital Pictures, you will be creating a digital one using a drag-and-drop website builder called Weebly! Ms. Hammond will walk you through how to set up your website and how to use Weebly's basic features. After that, use the "Digital Portfolio Instructions" document to guide you through the rest of the process. Make sure that your portfolio is professional and school appropriate but, at the same time, also make sure that it reflects who you are! |
1) Digital Citizenship Contract Program: Chrome & Word Hand In: Digital Citizenship Organizer Due Date: A - Tuesday, Sept. 13th B - Wednesday, Sept. 14th |
In this lesson you will learn all about the 6 Elements of Digital Citizenship, which will help you use the technology in this class effectively, respectably, and safely. First, you will take the Cyber-Saavy Quiz - if you score 100% you also score some free time! If not, you've got some extra studying to do. Next, you and your classmates will come up with some ideas about how to be good digital citizens in this course, then you'll record them on the Digital Citizenship Organizer. Last, each member of the class will read and sign the Digital Citizenship contract we put together! |
